The South End/Lower Roxbury area has a varied history, from a wealthy suburb in the late 19th century to a patchwork of rooming houses and jazz clubs in the early part of this century, to the diverse neighborhood that it is today. The community has also been seriously affected by youth violence.
South End/Lower Roxbury participated in the Youth Violence Systems Project [YVSP] in a unique way. YVSP staff met with leaders of community organizations as well as leaders of collaborations to lay a foundation for understanding youth violence as a system. Agency leaders expressed interest in gathering around a model based on the work of the community as well as a variety of academic disciplines. Many youth serving organizations in this neighborhood are poised for further participation in Phase 4 when training on the model takes place.
YVSP has consulted with the following organizations in the South End/Lower Roxbury area to gather information and align our work with the community's context:
South End/Lower Roxbury Youth Workers Alliance
Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción (IBA)
Project Hip Hop
Blackstone Community Center
Cathedral Housing
United South End Settlements
Vine Street Community Center
Orchard Gardens Community Center
